Iron County Jail Overview

Iron County Jail is the verified detention facility in Iron County. It is operated by the Iron County Sheriff's Office at the county government and courthouse complex in Hurley. The facility is a county jail, not a state prison, federal prison, ICE detention center, or separate regional jail. No separate jail annex, municipal jail roster, work-release building, medical unit, or federal contract facility was verified in Iron County.

The jail holds people in several local custody categories: pretrial detainees waiting for court action, sentenced county jail inmates, people held on warrants or court commitments, Huber/work-release inmates, and short-term local custody under sheriff control. Huber release is a custody privilege inside the jail. It is not a separate Iron County facility.

Iron County Jail Population

The county jail page does not publish a current daily population dashboard or official capacity line. The Vera Institute Incarceration Trends county dataset lists Iron County jail rated capacity as 36 beds in recent rows through 2025 and lists total jail population values of 7 in 2025, 8 in 2024, 4.25 in 2023, 8 in 2022, 4.5 in 2021, 4 in 2020, and 10 in 2019. These are annual dataset values, not a live roster count.

Local records add operational color. January 14, 2025 Law Enforcement Committee minutes say Sheriff Paul Samardich reported Iron County housed inmates for Price County for $21,459.48 and that a jail inspection completed in October had an overall good report with a few minor updates recommended. The annual population can remain low while daily classification, sex separation, medical needs, or court holds still create practical jail-management issues.

Iron County does not publish a full booking manual, but the normal county-jail path starts with arrest or commitment by an authorized agency. Booking commonly includes identity confirmation, warrant checks, property inventory, search, fingerprints where required, booking photo where jail policy requires it, health screening, classification, and housing assignment. The booking record and the court record are linked but separate.

Medical care is part of local custody. The Iron County Health Department 2024 annual report says the registered nurse completed 142 jail nursing service encounters, including 34 inmate assessments, 48 medical requests and follow-ups, 10 medication-management visits, mental-health referrals, emergency medical interventions, specialized-care transfers, lab reviews, and vital-sign monitoring. Those details support the local custody picture without creating a public medical record.

Iron County Jail Huber Release

Iron County publishes Huber release forms and a detailed work-release rules packet. A sentenced person with Huber privileges must report on the scheduled date by the time designated by the jailer and not later than 2:00 p.m. unless a court order, Jail Lieutenant, or Sheriff authorizes otherwise. The person must spend the first full day in jail and report sober. The jail can require urine or breath testing, and rules list a $6.00 cost for each second or discretionary drug test.

Huber inmates must verify employment, follow schedule rules, stay within work-hour and travel limits, and return through the Huber receiving area. Work is limited to 40 hours per week plus travel time. Work outside Iron County is generally not permitted unless current employment requires adjacent-county work in Price, Vilas, Ashland, or Gogebic. Iron County sentence Huber inmates are charged $20 per day for days released for work, and a $5 daily inmate fee applies to days not released for work. Huber transfers convicted in another county are charged $45 per day.

Iron County Jail Records Requests

For booking sheets, release records, arrest reports, bond information, or mugshots, use the sheriff records-request process. The county page lists email irso@ironcountywi.org, fax 715-561-2822, and phone 715-561-2440 ext. 2151. Wisconsin public-records law supports inspection and copying, but law-enforcement records can be redacted or withheld under exemptions, privacy concerns, safety concerns, juvenile confidentiality, or ongoing-investigation issues.

The sheriff page, jail page, records page, VINELink, WCCA, and DOC locator each answer a different question. A strong request names the person, date of birth if known, arrest or booking date, case number if known, and the exact record sought.

Note: Confirm custody and visit rules with Iron County Jail before travel, mailing funds, or assuming release from any online result.
